Who we are

Pontifex Games is an independent board game publisher focused on games with rich historical and religious themes. We began in 2024 with the design of our very first board game, created in close collaboration with Abbey of Bornem. In less than a year, we have already released three games, with a fourth title planned for June 2026 and a fifth currently in development for later that autumn!

History and heritage at the gaming table

Bringing great games to the table, it really is that simple. If we succeed in sparking interest in the extraordinary religious and historical heritage that can be found across the world, then our mission has truly succeeded. For us, it is about bringing people together around the table, playing a game, and starting conversations about the rich history woven into the game components themselves.
That is why we focus on bringing together two worlds: an engaging and immersive gameplay experience combined with a fascinating journey through history and art.
In Belgium, we also share the stories of our heritage alongside simply fascinating and inspiring themes through our lectures, which can be found and booked via Anders Gebracht, the brainchild of my wonderful partner Pia. These lectures are available in Dutch, French, and English.

Historical themes

We consciously choose to integrate existing historical artworks and heritage imagery into our games. This choice goes beyond mere aesthetics, it creates a bridge between gameplay and cultural heritage. By using authentic paintings, engravings, architecture, and historical motifs, we connect players with rich visual traditions while giving forgotten stories, places, and symbolism a renewed stage.
The use of existing artworks also gives our games a timeless visual identity and a deeper sense of historical authenticity, allowing them not only to be played, but also to spark curiosity about the history and culture on which they are based.

Crafted with care

We believe that great games should not only be meaningful at the table, but also responsibly produced. That is why we consciously choose sustainable, high-quality materials with respect for people, the environment, and long-lasting durability.
Whenever possible, we collaborate with European manufacturers and suppliers of game components, helping to reduce transport distances and keep production closer to home. This approach allows us to closely monitor quality, support local craftsmanship and expertise, and at the same time reduce the ecological footprint of our games.

Hire a game designer

Perhaps, as a museum, historical site, heritage location, church, or cultural organisation, you have wondered how to share your story in a creative and engaging way? What about a board game built around your location, history, and identity; in short, a game that tells your story? We would be delighted to help. We design custom board games on commission, guiding the process from the very first concepts and game mechanisms to the overall type of experience, always in close collaboration with you and your team. This ensures a game that reflects your values and serves as both an engaging gateway for visitors who want to learn more and a memorable souvenir to take home after their visit. Feel free to get in touch with us, we would be happy to meet over a coffee (or a virtual one via Teams) and explore together how we can bring your story to the gaming table.
